The Cross River State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, and Executive Chairman of Yakurr Local Government Area, Honourable Yibala Igri Inyang, has described Governor Bassey Otu as a true grassroots democrat whose leadership reflects the ideals of June 12.
Honourable Inyang, in a statement to mark Nigeria’s Democracy Day, saluted the sacrifices of the heroes of June 12, 1993, saying the historic day remains a symbol of the people’s power, accountability, constitutional order and people-centred governance.
He commended Governor Bassey Otu for what he called impactful leadership and commitment to delivering democratic dividends across Cross River State.
The ALGON Chairman specifically praised the administration’s completion of 127 kilometres of roads across the state, describing it as a demonstration that governance is about tangible impact rather than publicity.
He also applauded the state government’s security initiatives, noting that the sustained efforts in both kinetic and non-kinetic measures have contributed to making Cross River one of the peaceful states in Nigeria. According to him, the surrender of 171 criminals through government-supported operations reflects the administration’s determination to protect lives, property and the democratic space.
“Governor Otu’s policy direction mirrors the promise of democracy — service delivered quietly, institutions strengthened and communities uplifted. From rural roads and healthcare access to education, agriculture and WASH interventions, the councils are translating this vision into real benefits for the people,” Inyang stated.
He pledged the loyalty and commitment of ALGON Cross River and the 18 Local Government Chairmen to Governor Otu’s development agenda, promising continued focus on transparency, accountability and effective service delivery at the grassroots.
Honourable Inyang also commended the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary for upholding constitutional democracy, while appreciating the civil service, media, private sector, traditional institutions, civil society groups, trade unions, students and youths for their roles in sustaining democratic values.
He urged Nigerians to continue to protect democracy, stressing that the vision of June 12 would only be fully achieved when the people feel the impact of governance at the local government level.
