Kogi Poly Enforces Ban On Signing-Out Ceremonies As Management Warns Students

School cites state directive on costs and misconduct, says violators will face sanctions

By DANJUMA AMODU

Lokoja — Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has restated the state government’s ban on signing-out ceremonies in all tertiary institutions, warning that students who defy the order will face disciplinary measures.

The directive was contained in a circular issued through the Office of the Registrar, Dr Yahaya Segun Alilu, to Deans of Schools, the Directorate of Student Services, Heads of Department and Students’ Union bodies.

Confirming the move, John Amos Onimisi, Ag. Co-ordinator, Directorate of Public Relations and Protocols, said the Management is determined to uphold government policies and maintain order within the Polytechnic community.

The ban follows a September 3, 2025 announcement by the Kogi State Commissioner for Education, Dr Wemi Jones, after a meeting with education stakeholders. The commissioner said the state government had resolved to abolish signing-out ceremonies across tertiary institutions.

According to the Commissioner, the government observed that signing-out ceremonies had gradually evolved into extravagant and economically burdensome events that place unnecessary pressure on parents and guardians.

“The government therefore deemed it necessary to abolish the practice in the interest of students, parents, educational institutions, and society at large.”

Beyond the financial implications, concerns were also raised over increasing incidents of misconduct, public nuisance, reckless behaviour and other social vices that have become associated with some signing-out celebrations.

By reaffirming the directive, the Management under the leadership of Prof. Salihu Sanusi Avidime said it is committed to discipline, responsible conduct and promoting an academic environment that prioritises scholarship and character over unnecessary extravagance.

The Polytechnic believes that graduation should remain a dignified and memorable milestone celebrated within established institutional frameworks rather than through activities that may undermine public order or expose students to avoidable risks.

Students have been strongly advised to comply fully with the directive and refrain from organising, participating in, or facilitating any form of signing-out ceremony within or outside the campus.

The Management warned that any student found violating the directive will face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with government regulations.

The institution said it remains committed to producing graduates who embody excellence, discipline, responsibility and respect for constituted authority.
