MAIDUGURI – Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have rescued 10 National Examinations Council, NECO, candidates and teachers abducted during an ISWAP attack on Lassa Community in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, the Joint Task Force North East has said.

The military said the attack occurred at about 9:00 a.m. on Monday, June 29, 2026, when gunmen targeted the Technical Secondary School in Lassa while students were writing examinations.

According to a statement signed by the Acting Military Information Officer, Captain Mohammed Goni, the Theatre Command immediately deployed strike and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, ISR, aircraft from the Air Component of OPHK to support ground troops mobilised for a coordinated search and rescue operation.

“With support from the air platforms overhead providing guidance, troops made contact around DAGGU. After the firefight, the operation has so far resulted in the successful rescue of 10 victims, who were unhurt and are currently receiving the necessary care and support,” the statement read.

The military said efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining victim and bring the perpetrators to justice. During the encounter, troops outmanoeuvred the fleeing terrorists, inflicted casualties, and recovered seven motorcycles, which the military said significantly disrupted the attackers’ escape route.

The command confirmed that one soldier and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force were killed in the exchange of fire. “Their courage, selflessness and unwavering commitment exemplify the collective resolve of security forces and local volunteers who continue to risk their lives daily to protect innocent citizens and restore peace across the North East,” Captain Goni stated.

He added that OPHK, in collaboration with other security agencies and stakeholders, has intensified operations and reinforced security around vulnerable communities and schools to prevent a recurrence.

The military described the attack as an indication of “the desperation of terrorist groups who, faced with sustained pressure from ongoing military operations, have resorted to attacking soft targets.”

Operation HADIN KAI reiterated its mandate to protect civilians, safeguard critical infrastructure, and secure educational activities in the region. It urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information to security agencies, while cautioning against unverified reports and misinformation.
